Benefit of Standard Based Grading
Standard based learning focuses on ensuring that instructor can explain to all the stakeholders about what a learner has got within a particular time and what needs improvement. Traditional grading has always centered on the points each student has attained. The issue with learning standard is no longer marks, but the learning one has got. The traditional system assumes that once a student has passed a specific test, then they have obtained the necessary learning. The new system focuses on knowledge acquisition as a process that takes time, and people have to go through different experiences. Because activities are essential in learning; Marks is no longer the determinant of whether a student has mastered the content.
Students believed that no matter the effort they put, they could not change their abilities. Standard based grading ensures that students are motivated to make improvements where they have weaknesses.
When people use the traditional grading they use an algorithm to gauge learners knowledge. You will not use algorithms to assess the student rather you will have to engage in a conversation and use your observation to know where the student has reached in learning a particular subject.
Students have opportunities to explore the standards they feel comfortable developing. The moment one realizes they can handle a concept then they would try a more challenging one. Students can learn appropriately if allowed adequate time to familiarize with the content.
There lacks the specificity of feedback in the traditional system. However when it comes to the standard based grading its specific to every learner. Points in this improved system do not justify learning.
Students using this system can know where they stand in their learning curve. Unlike the traditional method, you can know from the students about the challenges they have in their learning process as they understand themselves way better than anybody else. Teachers must be patient with students to allow them to familiarize with standard based learning where a student does not shy away from speaking out freely. Standard based learning eliminates the powerlessness that is experienced by the so-called poor students in the traditional setting.
Assessment through points robbed students the ownership of their learning. However, students in the improved system can tell with clarity what they have learnt. Having a system that values projects is crucial in recognizing creative ideas. Learning standards presents each student as unique. Grades can be explained without complication in learning standards.
Both parties can evaluate the learning progress based on the initial targets to see where they need to adjust to enhance proper learning. When learners are not questioning if what they are learning will be tested then they will do everything to increase their knowledge for their benefit. Students learn what is essential and no longer feel profiled by points.
